Community Based Rehabilitation Associations.
Formation of CBR associations was one of the initiatives identified during the first CBR Africa conference in Uganda to further strengthen the sharing of experience among African countries. These associations would help create a linkage between all the stakeholders in the development and sustainability of CBR programmes. They would also provide forums for sharing information as well as lobby and advocate for disabled people and their families. CAN is a catalyst to this process of formation of associations and works at identifying and liaising with existing CBR groups.
In Uganda CBR professionals were identified and invited to a meeting that was held to discuss formation of an association. As a result a CBR club that meets every last friday of the month was formed. Club discussions will be shared on this site to provide a way forward for other groups that are trying to get together.
In Kenya there has been formation of a CBR association. As a follow up to the first CBR conference in Uganda, there has also been a CBR conference organized and held in Kenya.
CAN encourages the formation of CBR Associations in participating countries as avenues of lobbying and advocacy for disabled people and their families, as well as a forum through which they can share information and create linkage between all stakeholders in development and sustainability of CBR programmes.
CAN will provide guidelines on setting up associations that encourage locals to set up CBR forums. Once working groups have been identified by responsible persons in different countries, CAN will support group meetings with the relevant information materials and occasionally minimal financial assistance.
