• What is CBR?
CBR is a strategy within community development for the rehabilitation, equalization of opportunities, and social integration of all people with disabilities. It is implemented through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves, their families, organizations and communities, and the relevant governmental and non-governmental health, education, vocational, social and other services” (WHO, 2004).

• What is CAN?
CAN is an independent non governmental organisation set up to facilitate information sharing on different CBR experience and initiatives across Africa. CAN aims to collect and distribute information on CBR in order to enhance development of better CBR practice with the end result of improving the quality and human rights of people with disabilities in Africa and beyond.

• How does CAN operate?
CAN has a secretariat in Uganda that is responsible for collection and dissemination of CBR related information with CAN members. These members include disabled persons organisations, disability NGO's. Although CAN is not a funding agency, it acts as an underlying force that lobbies CBR programmes in Africa to interact and share experiences and information.

• In which countries are the CAN member organisations?
CAN has members in countries including South Africa, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Ghana, Liberia, Congo.

• Are there other CAN offices elsewhere in Africa?
No, CAN only has a secretariat in Uganda so far

• What does it take to become a CAN member?
CAN membership is absolutely free. All you have to do is give us your email address and we will contact you.

• What are the benefits of CAN membership?
• Web site: Once you become a member and give us more information about your organisation, we place information about your organisation on our website. This enables CBR practitioners and other stakeholders who visit our web site to learn about your organisation and its activities, and to contact you.
• You will receive the CAN Annual Report
• Your organisation will be listed in the CBR directory
• You will also have the opportunity to post some of your current information on the CAN website.
• As a member of this discussion group you will be able to enter into constructive long term exchange of ideas and views on the best way forward for CBR in Africa with the end result of improving the quality of life and human rights of people with disabilities in Africa and beyond.
• You will be part of a team helping to promote access to appropriate information on disability and development and facilitating the documentation of community initiatives and good practice in CBR.

• Does CAN provide financial or material help?
Please note that the benefits of CAn membership are purely in terms of information services and, because of our size and budget, CAN regrets that it is unable to provide members with any financial or material assistance

• When you subscribe to cbrafrica mailing list you are able to share information about programmes, experiences and ongoing activities with other members.
